On an island in Loch Earn just off
St Fillans.
Now totally ruined but once a stronghold
of the MacNeishes from 1250 until mid 15thC.
As the power of the MacNeishes diminished
they were reduced to plundering the surrounding countryside and then retreating
to their island fortress. In 1612 they attacked MacNabs whose lands lay to
the north.
The MacNabs decided to end this lawlessness
by a daring attack involving carrying a boat over the mountains in order
to attack in complete surprise. They stormed the castle and killed the chief
of the MacNeishes and most of his clan.
The MacNab crest has a depiction of
the dead MacNeish chief's head.
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich used Loch
Earn Castle for some time after the demise of the MacNeishes. |
