In a powerful address during New York Climate Week, Sarah, Duchess of York, announced the launch of the Youth Impact Council (YIC), an initiative aimed at amplifying the voices of the younger generation in tackling some of the planet’s most pressing issues. The Duchess expressed a commitment to fostering intergenerational dialogue, highlighting the importance of including youth perspectives in global discussions.

The Duchess, who serves as the Founding Ambassador of the YIC, remarked, “My generation hasn’t acted quickly enough to confront some of the great challenges of our age. Too often, young people are denied the resources, recognition, and the seat at the table they deserve. The purpose of the Youth Impact Council is to change that.”

The launch event celebrated the council’s inaugural initiative in New York City, attended by its founders, including Anna-Grace Millward and Kevin Patel, who serve as Youth Co-Chairs, along with Richard Loomis, the Founding Executive Director. The gathering was marked by a sense of urgency, reflecting the need for immediate action to address the climate crisis and other societal challenges.

During her speech, the Duchess shared a personal reflection on her new role as a grandmother, which has reshaped her perspective on life and responsibility. “I want to be able to look my grandchildren in the face and say I did everything I could, using whatever platform I might have, to empower their generation to make the changes we need to see,” she said.

The YIC aims to bridge generational divides by connecting the energy and creativity of youth with the wisdom and experience of established leaders. This initiative seeks to create a space for open dialogue and collaboration, allowing for the sharing of knowledge, resources, and networks free from bureaucratic obstacles.

Millward, one of the council’s co-founders, emphasised the role of young people in driving significant social movements, particularly regarding climate change. “Young people are on the frontlines of some of the world’s most impactful social movements, and climate change is among the most pressing,” she stated. “That’s why I’m thrilled to co-found the Youth Impact Council and help bring it to the world today, at New York Climate Week.”

The council’s mission is to build a global community of individuals under 35 who can showcase their initiatives and amplify their contributions to society. The Duchess called on attendees to recognise the potential of young leaders, stating, “We need to recognise that they can be the solution. I have met many inspirational young leaders during my charity work, and I want to listen, learn, and amplify their voices.”

With its focus on fostering collaboration and understanding between generations, the Youth Impact Council aims to inspire action and create lasting change. The initiative marks a significant step towards empowering youth to take the lead in addressing the challenges faced by their communities and the planet.

As the YIC sets forth on its mission, it is poised to become a vital platform for nurturing innovative solutions to the complex issues of our time, enabling young leaders to shape a more sustainable and equitable future.
