Neglecting Foot Health? It Could Cost More Than You Think

A new survey has revealed that the majority of UK adults are neglecting their foot health, a habit that could have serious consequences for their overall well-being.

The research, conducted as part of DB Wider Fit Shoes’ Joyful Strides for Wider Feet campaign, found that 74% of people have not had their feet measured since childhood. Despite recognising the importance of proper footwear, 65% of respondents admitted to wearing the wrong shoe size.

Experts warn that ill-fitting shoes can contribute to a range of health problems, from foot pain and bunions to chronic back and knee issues.

    Survey Findings: A Nationwide Issue

The survey of 2,000 UK adults highlighted key concerns:

    • 74% have not had their feet measured since the age of 16.
    • 17% say their shoes are too narrow, with 76% acknowledging the impact this has on daily life.
    • 96% agree that correct shoe size is essential, yet many fail to check their measurements.
    • 70% blame lack of awareness for not choosing properly fitting footwear.

Despite prioritising comfort over fashion, many people unknowingly wear ill-fitting shoes due to convenience or outdated size assumptions.

The Hidden Costs of Poor Footwear

Podiatrists warn that ignoring foot health can have a ripple effect throughout the body.

“Our feet are the foundation of our bodies,” said Joanne Wynne, podiatrist and Managing Director of Toetal Footcare Ltd, who consulted on the campaign. “Neglecting them doesn’t just cause localised pain—it can impact posture, mobility, and even mental well-being. Preventative care, such as wearing the right footwear, is essential.”

    A Life-Changing Fit

For those with medical conditions affecting their feet, finding the right shoes can make a huge difference.

Anne Wheale, from Kent, has Peripheral Neuropathy, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Osteoarthritis—a combination that makes walking painful. She struggled to find comfortable shoes until her podiatrist recommended DB Wider Fit Shoes.

“Finding the right size was life-changing,” she said. “I can now walk comfortably, and it’s improved my quality of life.”

Anne’s experience underscores the need for greater awareness around footwear choices, particularly for individuals with specific medical needs.

    Bridging the Knowledge Gap

DB Wider Fit Shoes’ Managing Director, Charles Denton, believes education is key.

“The data speaks for itself,” he said. “Comfort and function are more important to people than fashion, yet their behaviour doesn’t reflect that. Our campaign’s next phase will focus on educating customers—especially those suffering in silence—on the life-changing impact of proper footwear.”

    Building Healthy Foot Habits

The Joyful Strides for Wider Feet campaign is offering practical advice to help people prioritise foot health:

    1. Measure Feet Regularly – Foot size changes over time due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging.
    2. Choose Shoes That Fit Your Lifestyle – Footwear should support daily activities while providing adequate comfort.
    3. Invest in Quality Shoes – Brands like DB Wider Fit Shoes offer both style and support for wider feet and foot conditions.

DB Wider Fit Shoes invites people to step into wellness by prioritising foot health. The company’s website provides expert resources, an online fitting guide, and a range of supportive footwear options.
